Lydia is the author of the Opium and Absinthe, a novel that tells the story of a wealthy young New York heiress who investigates a series of vampire-like killings after the first publication of Dracula. English folksinger David Walton narrates an excerpt from the book, then she shares her insights into writing characters, researching historic settings and even a strange experience she had in a cemetery. To finish the show, Lydia talks about the strange history of medicine, a topic she writes about in her book Quackery. People really did grind up mummies for medicinal powder and believed mercury was a magical elixir.
