What's in a (neighborhood) name?

SoHo, TriBeCa, Dumbo, NoLIta. Those are all neighborhoods around the city that any New Yorker should be able to point out on a map. But where did those names come from? When does a nickname pass the point to formal acceptance? And how are the names of our city's neighborhoods continuing to evolve, whether because of new residents, new lingo or new real estate investments?
