Episode 58: There’s More Than One Way to Eat an Unhealthy Diet

SO many people try one diet or another in the pursuit of eating healthier, but are they succeeding? In this episode I am joined by Dr. Zach Conrad,  a nutritional epidemiologist, who has recently published a study titled “Quality of popular diet patterns in the United States: evaluating the effect of substitutions for foods high in added sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and refined grains.” It might be a long title, but it barely scratches the surface of how interesting their findings are. For example, 50% of the US population has tried some kind of popular (or as I would say, fad) diet in the past year (many of them more than one!). And according to the study’s findings, the general population diet is scoring around 57% out of 100%, with many of the other diets falling close behind. Dr. Zach discusses some of the study’s other surprising results, why he himself is an advocate of small changes for healthy eating, and why step number one in getting our diets healthier might just be getting rid of labeling them to begin with...
