Yes, ADHD is VERY real

TW: Mention of suicidal thoughts.

In one of their most vulnerable episodes, Danielle and Adam sit down to discuss the impact that ADHD has had on their family. While currently fully in the thick of this journey, opening up about this struggle was not easy, but it is something they know could help so many others. Having a daughter and a son who struggle, Danielle and Adam reveal the deep heartbreak that has fully consumed them as parents for the past year. However, they also feel so lucky and grateful to have the platform and connections to research and to advocate for their kids. They offer ideas and steps that will help other families who are also figuring out this oftentimes misunderstood diagnosis. Some of what they discuss:

  • Adam's diagnosis at age 17 and how it affected him in school, and how it currently affects him as an adult.
  • How their son and daughter's ADHD manifest in such different ways, and how that has made it all the more confusing to understand.
  • The pain of watching kids struggle because of the lack of understanding and education concerning ADHD.
  • What they want other parents, as well as kids' peers to understand about how to actively support, include and accept someone despite their differences.
  • The other, more positive side of ADHD, and the incredible traits those who experience it oftentimes possess.
  • Why a 504 or IEP won't necessarily help their son with his form of ADHD.
  • Ways we can all be more empathetic, supportive, and inclusive humans to the Neurodiverse community.

Whether a person is impacted personally by ADHD, raising a child who has been diagnosed or is awaiting an evaluation, or someone simply wants to better understand how to be an ally to those who present as "different" in some way, this is definitely an episode that is well worth the listen.
