PSG Undefeated and Underwhelming

Paris Saint-Germain are undefeated since the start of the new season, but you would hardly guess that by the reaction of many supporters who want to see more from this super team. On this episode of The 1970 (recorded last Sunday prior to the win over Olympique Lyonnais), Marc Damon is joined by fellow PSG Talk contributor, James Teague, to recap the disappointing 1-1 draw against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League. James kicks things off with his thoughts on the match, which saw Ander Herrera give PSG the early lead only to see Brugge equalize before halftime. The draw felt like a loss for PSG, and fans were left wondering how a team with so much firepower could look so impotent. The issues are plenty, as Marc points out. The midfield lacks a defensive presence, especially with Leandro Paredes on the pitch. With PSG's attack-minded full-backs, the defense was left exposed and with very little coverage, Brugge found success in the attack. PSG's offense wasn't much better. Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi all started, but PSG only managed to record nine total shots with four on target. With the offense and defense struggling, all eyes turn to Mauricio Pochettino who is still figuring things out to put it kindly. There's a lot of quality in the squad, but right now, it's difficult to explain what PSG's identity is, and with two games against Manchester City coming up, supporters are desperate to see improvement. As the guys explain, the draw against Brugge will either be a wake-up call for PSG to sort things out or, foreshadowing of the drumming that City will lay upon Les Parisiens. Let's hope Pochettino can unlock PSG's potential quick, fast, and in a hurry.
