250: Lessons Learned from 250 Podcast Episodes with Carol Cox [The Medium is the Message Series]

We’re celebrating 250 episodes of the Speaking Your Brand podcast!

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you lessons I’ve learned after hosting and creating 250 episodes, including what makes podcasting unique and different from video and writing and how it has impacted my business and thought leadership.

This is the first episode in a new series we’re doing that I’m calling “The Medium is the Message.”

This phrase is from media theorist Marshall McLuhan and books he wrote in the 1950s and 60s.

McLuhan analyzed technologies (mediums) like the printing press, electric light, radio, and television and saw that it was the medium itself, not the particular content, that affected and changed society and human behavior. It was the medium that dictated how people interacted with it.

I explain a bit more about this in the intro, but what I really want for us to get out of this is that as entrepreneurs, marketers, and content creators, it’s tempting for us to just copy/paste content from one platform to the next (guilty!).

But, it doesn’t work that well because each platform, each channel, each medium is different, wants different things, and the audience interacts differently on it.

I’m starting this series on The Medium is the Message talking about podcasting, since I’m at episode 250 and because it’s my primary content channel.

Other episodes in this series will focus on the channels (mediums) of public speaking, video, TV, social media, email and other forms of writing (books and articles).
