Roberto Surace - Costume and Set Designer

Roberto Surace is establishing himself as an exciting and innovative designer. He trained at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia where he is originally from. Roberto's experience encompasses all facets of the backstage world having worked in numerous roles on a diverse range of commercial productions both in London and Australia. This allows him to bring a practical and well thought out approach to his vision whilst still maintaining a fresh and exciting design. In 2014 Roberto gained his first West End credit with The Play That Goes Wrong, winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for BEST NEW COMEDY. Since then he has had three shows running simultaneously on the West End, UK and International Tours and Broadway. Roberto was also nominated for the 2016 Broadway World Audience Choice Awards for The Comedy About A Bank Robbery in London and in 2017 for The Play That Goes Wrong on Broadway for which he had the highest percentage vote for a play in the Best Costume Design category as voted by the general public for the 2016/2017 Broadway season. In this episode, he talks all things costume design with Crossing the Line Podcast, and explains how a three month job with Mischief Theatre's 'Play That Goes Wrong' turned into a six year job! As always, we end the episode by asking which movie he's ashamed of having never seen, and what advice he might give to upcoming designers.
