Episode 86 | "House of the Rising Sun"

On September 5th, 1964 The Animal’s cover of "House of the Rising Sun" started a three week run at number one on the US singles chart. This came centuries after the song was originally conceived which leads us to its mythical and legendary status. Was it about a prostitute? A prisoner? Or was it about a gambler? Just where was this house located? New Orleans? England? Was it even a house? We’ll explore the many theories behind the song and also get into the story of The Animals iconic version. We’ll also get to the artists who recorded their own renditions both before and after the Animals version including ones in French, German and Spanish.
