Express Investigation: Deleting history from the textbooks of future

An investigation by the Indian Express has revealed that the NCERT has recently made sweeping changes in social science school textbooks for Classes 6 to 12. These have been the most exhaustive changes since the NDA government came to power in 2014. They include deleting references to the 2002 Gujarat riots, dropping passages that dealt with Emergency’s draconian impact on people and institutions, and removing chapters on protests and social movements.

In this episode, Indian Express’ National Education Editor Ritika Chopra, who undertook the investigation, joins host Shashank Bhargava to discuss her findings. And then later, we hear from political commentator Suhas Palshikar, and sociologist Yogendra Yadav about the implications of these changes, and why the BJP feels the need to do them, including removing references to the Emergency.
