Ep.242 - Doomerism, Optimism & Subway Surfing

In a week where:

  1. More than 150 schools in England close after having a type of potentially dangerous concrete.
  2. India successfully launches their 1st Spacecraft to The Sun.
  3. Rebuild cost for the town of Lahaina is estimated at $5.5B.
  4. Greece suffer torrential rain, days after the largest recorded wildfires in Europe.
  5. Enrique Tarrio - the former leader of the Proud Boys - has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

In Environment: (4:34) I've tried to at least now and again talk about something environment/climate related; it's not lost on me that I can be a tad pessimistic about it all. And whilst it's not great to be all gloom/doom, is it worse to be optimistic?

In Society: (16:13) Speaking of pessimism... Britain! Everyday there's a news item that will make me sad, turns out it's not just me. Are we collectively getting more depressed?

In Film: (34:51) The "Golden Age" of Hollywood is such a fascinating time, even the designation interests me. Because whilst the moniker is for the films that came out, it's ironic considering the amount of turmoil that happened during the era, such as something known as the "Paramount Decrees".

Lastly, in Life: (51:50) Something I've always liked the concept of but would never in my life actually do is Subway Surfing. It can come off as a relic of 80s Graffiti culture, but there's people that still do it! Even though people continue to die doing it.
