Riots in Mumbai ( Dec 92-Jan 93 ) - Backgrounder

Welcome to our PODCAST SERIES on Mumbai Blasts of 1993. In this episode, we will explore and review the events prevalent in the City prior to Mumbai Blasts on 12th Mar 1993. National Scenario - Ayodhya Excavations and Quest for Ram’s Temple Living an experience is better than recreating it in writing or visuals. However, acts of terror or the times of unrest are the ones, that no one would want to undergo if he or she is sane. A group of nine archaeologists had excavated the Ram Janmabhoomi site at Ayodhya for five years ( from 1975-1979), and discovered ample evidence of a temple below. People’s Voice for a Ram Mandir at Ayodhya There began a campaign for the construction of a temple dedicated to Lord Rama at the disputed site. Several rallies and marches were held as a part of this movement, including the Ram Rath Yatra led by Mr. L. K. Advani. Babri Mosque Demolition – 6th Dec 1992 A subsequent inquiry into the incident by Honourable Justice M S Librehan found 68 people responsible. Justice Liberhan wrote that the posted bureaucrats and police officers to Ayodhya stayed silent during the demolition, which resulted in several months of intercommunal rioting between communities, causing the death of at least 2,000 people. Retaliatory violence against Hindus also occurred in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In a March 2005 book, former Intelligence Bureau head Maloy Krishna Dhar claimed that Babri mosque demolition was planned 10 months in advance . . . . Situation in Mumbai as Babri Masjid happened. Many people suggest that the blasts of Mar 1993 were linked to the riots that preceded them. Justice for the blasts is one thing, but what about justice for the victims of the riots? In this episode, we seek to share some insights and put things in perspective. Sharad Pawar was Chief Minister of Maharashtra till June 1991 after which he became Defence Minister in the Narasimha Rao government. Pawar wanted a trusted successor and so Sudhakarrao Naik . . . . Two phases of communal violence escalated in Bombay in 1992–1993. For five days in December 1992 (i.e. 6th to 10th December 1992) and fifteen days in January 1993 (6th to 20th January 1993), Bombay, Suburbs, the prima of the country, was rocked by riots and violence . . . . Trouble appeared to be brewing in the city even before the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the percolation of the news on 6th December 1992. The repeated media coverage, particularly on television, of footage of file pictures of previous kar seva during which some of them were seen dancing on the dome of the Masjid, as well as the latest video shots showing actual demolition, caused a sense of deep resentment, frustration, and anger . . . In Nirmal Nagar jurisdiction, a Ganesh idol in the Ganesh Mandir on Anant Kanekar Marg was found decapitated and moved out from its place of installation though the lock on the grill surrounding the sanctum sanctorum was found intact.
