UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH

Let's start a conversation around mental health because this can change the game of life, altogether. Mental health is the silent pandemic humanity is going through. It is damaging health, wealth, education, career and even lives. According to an estimate by WHO, two of the most common mental health conditions, depression and anxiety, cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year. People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions. On the other hand, according to WHO only, Affordable, effective and feasible strategies exist to promote, protect and restore mental health. The need for action on mental health is indisputable and urgent. Mental health has intrinsic and instrumental value and is integral to our well-being. Mental health is determined by a complex interplay of individual, social and structural stresses and vulnerabilities. Keeping yourself physically fit helps you in keeping yourself mentally fit. But, this is not enough, and there is a gap. That gap is called mental health. Religion, spirituality and philosophy have emerged out of this gap only. It helped us before we were exposed to modern sciences. Now there is science to help us in a better way and psychology is there to tell us - how.
