Reporters Without Orders Ep 208: UAPA cases in Punjab, women’s safety in UP

This week, it’s an all-Newslaundry panel as host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Ayush Tiwari and Akanksha Kumar.

They start by discussing Ayush’s report on youngsters being framed in UAPA cases in Punjab and shoddy police probes falling apart in court. “From 2009 till date, Punjab has seen 112 UAPA cases evoked on youngsters and conviction has happened in only three of them,” says Ayush, detailing the legal aspects of UAPA and how people in Punjab have become more careful about their social media use amid all this.

They then talk about Akanksha’s piece on the issue of women’s safety in Unnao – in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh – where the mother of a rape survivor has decided to contest elections in a bid to fight for the cause of justice for women. “She hopes to bring justice for her daughter by helping the others not meet the same fate,” says Akanksha, quoting Asha, the Congress candidate. She also mentions how politicians are talking about women’s safety in the state.

This, and a lot more, as they talk about what made news, what didn’t, and what shouldn’t have.

Tune in.
