"The Book of Clarence" is a religious epic that deviates from its religious theme. Despite Clarence's twin brother Thomas being one of Jesus' apostles, Clarence himself is a skeptical atheist. In addition to his disbelief in religion, Clarence is involved in the illicit drug trade, both selling and consuming large quantities of marijuana. His world is filled with underground clubs where nearly naked women sensually dance and shady characters lurk. Despite his association with Jesus' apostle, Clarence is not known for his intelligence in Jerusalem. This is evident in the film's opening scene, where Clarence takes a risky decision to borrow money from a notorious gangster named Jedediah the Terrible, played by Eric Kofi-Abrefa, in order to participate in a chariot race against Mary Magdalene, portrayed by Teyana Taylor. It remains unclear why Clarence sees this as a safe or profitable opportunity, given the inherent risks involved.
