The Capture of a Spy
Double Agent Robert Phillip Hanssen, while working for the FBI, sold American secrets to the Russians for over two decades before he was exposed and arrested for treason. Hanssen’s confession prompted a representative from the US Department of Justice to describe this betrayal as “possibly the worst intelligence disaster in US history.” Eric O’Neill was working for the FBI’s Special Surveillance Group as an investigative specialist and was assigned to work as Hanssen’s assistant. Eric’s true role was to get close enough to Hanssen to learn as much as possible about what secret information Hanssen was turning over to a foreign government. The situation became the subject of Universal Studio’s movie, Breach, released to critical acclaim in 2007. Tune in to hear Eric’s unique harrowing experience and his role in the capture of the most notorious spy in US history.
