Accident (1985)

Shankar Nag’s socio-political Kannada feature film Accident, released in 1985, bagged the National Film Award and several Karnataka state film awards for Best Picture. Acting alongside him was his real-life brother Ananth Nag and his wife Arundathi Nag. The film was critically acclaimed for its engaging storyline about the tussle between corrupt politicians and the Indian judiciary in the 80s. Colloquially dubbed as Auto Raja by fans, Shankar Nag has delivered some of the most iconic Kannada movies of all time. The film, also directed by Nag, sees him play a journalist. The film follows a corrupt politician who would go to any lengths to protect his son and his own reputation. His son Deepak runs over a few pedestrians while in an inebriated state. Only one man survives. The rest of the film plays out like a cat-and-mouse chase, with police and media in tow. Though there are no songs in the movie, music maestro Illayaraja was hired to score the background for a few scenes in the film. The sounds of retro car screeches, typewriting, camera shutters, the silence during accident scenes, the pink television noise all add up to lend the film its discomfiting environment. Although shot 35 years ago, this deep-rooted film is definitely worth revisiting for its relevance and depiction. If you haven't watched this classic then do so on Jiocinema, Youtube and MX player.Well, that was the Lost and Found Kannada language film Accident for today on OTTplay.I shall be back again with another critically acclaimed film but lesser-known. Until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.
