Savitribai Phule and her courageous decisions
In the 19th century, and even in contemporary times, illustrates how certain castes restrict women from participating in funeral rites solely because of their gender. After the passing of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, when close relatives opposed Yashwant, the adopted son of Jyotiba and Savitribai, from performing the last rites of Mahatma Phule, it was Savitribai who stepped forward to carry out the rituals.
