From Walpole to Johnson: 300 years of British Prime Ministers
Marking the anniversary of 300 years of British Prime Ministers, Sir Anthony Seldon joins us to look back on the characters and careers, and the controversies and contradictions, of some of the most famous occupants of 10 Downing Street. From Walpole to Johnson, via Disraeli, Gladstone, Churchill, Thatcher and many more, we look at three centuries of Prime Ministers and reflect on how the role has changed over time – and who has, or hasn’t, made a success of their period in office. And, as Boris Johnson grapples with the biggest crisis in decades, which Prime Ministers have best demonstrated leadership when under the greatest pressure? Joining Sir Anthony on the panel are Dr Catherine Haddon, Senior Fellow and the Institute’s resident historian, and Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary, University of London and Deputy Director of the UK in a Changing Europe. Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the IfG, chairs the conversation. Audio production by Alex Rees. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
