The blues-inspired southern rock of the 1970s from bands such as the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd tapped was loved across the nation. For many southerners, it tapped into a desire for nostalgia, rebellion, and reclaiming the South as a distinct region. How should we think about that music now? And what does the Confederate flag have to do with any of it?
