Penelope Spheeris

Our spotlight on female filmmakers closes with Penelope Spheeris and her Decline of Western Civilization trilogy. Commercially known for her work directing Wayne’s World, Spheeris got her start studying at UCLA and collaborating with comedians Richard Pryor and Albert Brooks on short films in the 1970s. After launching the first music video production company in Los Angeles, she turned her camera to the LA punk scene from 1981 to 1998 for what would become the iconic Decline trilogy. The Decline films were only recently made available for home viewing in 2015 thanks to an incredible restoration by Shout! Factory
