2024 Surgical Techniques Award Winner
At the 2024 AAHKS Annual Meeting, Shaun P. Patel, MD and Andrew M. Schwartz, MD sat down to speak with the winner of the 2024 Surgical Techniques and Technologies Award. Two of the study’s authors, Aleksander Mika, MD and J. Ryan Martin, MD addressed the question of the study, if synovial fluid metal ion levels could be used to diagnose aseptic loosening in cemented TKA.
With this prospective trial, authors found synovial levels of Cobalt and Zirconium were elevated in patients with aseptic loosening compared to patients with well-fixed implants.
In this recording, Drs. Mika and Martin also discussed their plans to improve the accuracy of the diagnostic approach that was taken and how having more accurate information can lead to better patient outcomes and more effective detection of aseptic loosening following primary cemented TKA.
