Curbing the world’s huge and increasing appetite for meat is essential to avoid devastating climate change according to the United Nations. After all, agriculture, especially meat and dairy, accounts for 70% of global freshwater consumption, 38% of the total land use and 19% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. As plant-based eating becomes more prominent, an increasing number of authoritative voices in nutrition and health are challenging conventional beliefs and the idea that one needs to eat animal products to be strong and healthy.
