The High-Stakes Conflict Over Kashmir

The dispute over Kashmir is one of the longest running conflicts in the world. It has been a region of dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. Both countries claim the region, although each controls only a part of it. Both countries are also nuclear powers.  Last week saw an escalation in this conflict when the Indian government stripped the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir of its special status. Now the disputed territory is under lockdown, and back in the international spotlight. Host Tamara Khandaker talks to Ayesha Ray, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at King's College, Pennsylvania. They walk through the history of tension in the region, how the fight over Kashmir has evolved, and why this conflict is coming up again now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
