In this books, Foucault extends his temporal scope of sexuality to go as far back as the Greeks. Foucault does this for a number of reasons but may, I believe, be understood primarily as his move to dissuade the argument that asceticism, or the control of sexuality, is a phenomenon rooted in the 17th and 18th centuries.
