Coronavirus news, updates and information for 03-17-2020 COVID-19 AM Alert

This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info… Just the facts… for Tuesday March 17th, 2020.   Nearly 7 million residents of San Francisco and surrounding communities have been ordered to shelter in place. New Jersey has a statewide curfew, from 8PM to 5AM. Cases in the U.S. approach 5,000, with nearly 1,000 in New York State. The White House set out new guidelines to slow the spread. Asking citizens to keep gatherings to less than 10 people and avoid unnecessary travel. The New York Times notes that scientists tracking the spread believe that for every confirmed case in a community, there are 5 to 10 undetected cases. The U.S. Surgeon General has warned that if we do not take precautions like social distancing seriously and immediately, we are risking a fate similar to the situation in Italy. A vaccine trial for the virus administered the first dose to a participant Monday. Testing will take many more months.  Los Angeles County is releasing inmates with less than 30 days left on their sentence. The Kentucky Derby has been postponed.   Canada has closed their border to non-citizens. US Citizens and permanent residents are exempt. But all entering will face a 14 day quarantine. France began a country wide 15 day quarantine.  Germany asks their citizens to stay home as the country sees an increase of over 1,000 cases in a day. The city of London requests citizens to “stop all non-essential social contact”. Global case count: 183, 441.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
