Rethinking the Amistad Rebellion (2010 Kemble Lecture)
Marcus Rediker offers a new interpretation of a famous rebellion by 53 enslaved Africans who rose up and captured their Spanish schooner, the “Amistad,” in 1839. In his lecture, Rediker puts special emphasis on the African and maritime dimensions of this major event in the worldwide struggle against slavery. Rediker is professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh.
