Episode 12 - COVID-19: Spread Wellness, Not Menace

What is going to happen? What am I supposed to do? When will this end? Nothing helps to moderate the fear of uncertain situations like these. So the question here is – how are we handling this state of being? Its not just you and me, but it’s the entire world, we are all going through a difficult time. Remember, you are not alone. We are all in it together. Since you are listening to this episode, firstly I hope that you are safe. I hope you are healthy. And I hope your loved ones are healthy too. What I want you to do now is take a deep breath. Like really. You might think this won’t help, but ask yourself – is constantly worrying about what’s going to happen helping you in any way? No right?! So how about you take three deep breaths and then we move on to learning how to cope in the times of uncertain situations like these - • So Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable, without forcing it.  • Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.  • Breathe in gently. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5. You could try that technique. • Repeat this process three times. • Bringing your mind back to the moment is imperative during times like these. Remind yourself that there is very little control that all have in this situation. The most we can do is take all the necessary precautions that are needed. Now, take a break from the internet. Do not overexpose yourself to the media. Staying informed can help you, no doubt but constantly checking notifications on the news will simply overwhelm you. Try to limit the amount of time. Set limits on how often you tune into the news of the media coverage. Do take a break from social media if you think the updates are getting a little too much. Moreover, arm yourself with the facts. There are tons of videos and messages that are going viral on what’s app, Facebook, Instagram and half of it is only creating chaos, fear and panic in people. Be mindful of where you are getting the news from. Stay on top of what’s happening by referring to the official government websites and the WHO as this will give you up to date information from the reliable sources. Think of the ways where you can be a role model and help your loved ones by simply creating a positive environment for yourself and others around you. As the WHO says that “Working together as one community can help to create solidarity in addressing covid-19 together.” Self-Isolation has been recommended if you have even the slightest of symptoms of the flu. Self-isolation simply means staying away from other people and taking care of yourself. Self-isolating can be daunting but there are apps like Whats App, Facetime that can help you receive the social support from your loved ones. This way you can stay connected and maintain your social network. You might need the extra support, so turn to people who love you and care for you. Create a routine that prioritises looking after yourself. If you look at the positive side, you can read more, watch more movies and shows, and try some relaxing techniques. In the entire development of negativity, take a different approach. You didn’t choose this however if you are a part of it, experience it as a different rhythm of life and rest as much as possible. The corona virus pandemic is a challenge to individual lives, as well as to our health care system and to the global economy. It is also a challenge to our mental well-being, as individuals and as a society.  And it is an opportunity to reflect on our core values that are easy to overlook when all is going well. Times like these simply demand our adaptability, compassion and clear decision making skills. A reminder to each one of us that - Life is beautiful. It never ends. Fear not. We are all in it together, and we will get through this. Take care and stay safe and healthy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thehappinessproject/message
