Cordele, GA - My Old Lady vs. The Old Ball & Chain

Welcome to the "Watermelon Capital of the World"!  Incorporated in 1888, Cordele was named after Cordelia Hawkins, the daughter of the the president of SAM railroad.  Cordele's early growth was due to the presence of two railroads, the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery line (SAM), and the Georgia Southern and Florida.  In 1968, Cordele was gifted a Titan missile, which still stands at the intersection of I-75 and US-280.   Cordele was called home by such notables as blues singer, Buster Brown; serial killer, Janie Lou Gibbs; and the writer of No Time for Sergeants, Mac Hyman. Join us to find out how we think the town's name is pronounced.
