Reporters Without Orders Ep 198: Jharkhand lynchings, death toll in farmer protests

This week, host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Srishti Jaiswal, independent writer and journalist, and Oishika Neogi, a human rights researcher and writer at Karwan-e-Mohabbat.

Oishika talks about her story in Article14 on the widows of three people lynched in Jharkhand. On her responsibility as a reporter, she says, “We do report hate crimes, talk about it, but what after that? We forget. But these people have to live with it.”

Srishti talks about her Al Jazeera report on the “human cost” of the farmer protests. “They won and it had been a great journey for them, but at what cost?” she says. “They have to live with this pain.”

The panel agrees that the government fails at giving out data on everything from farmer deaths to lynching records. “The data collection is very weak within the government in every case,” Srishti says. “They don’t realise how crucial it is.”

This, and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn’t, and what shouldn’t have.

Tune in.
