#109 - Do Parents Of Kids Make The Best Options Traders?

Hey everyone, Kirk here again and welcome back to the daily call. Today, I want to answer the question – “Do parents of kids actually make batter options traders?” Although this may be a little bit of a controversial topic… And if you don't have kids yet, you won’t understand where I’m coming from, but I think you'll appreciate just the concept that I want to try to give to you guys today and maybe make you think a little bit differently about options trading. But here’s the deal. Look. I really believe that options trading is like having kids. I think it's very similar to having kids or at least you should treat it like you're having a kid. The reason is because most people get started in options trading and they whimsically go into it. What I mean by this is that they commit to trading options, but then they really don't commit to actually doing the activities and starting this like a business. They want to make a full-time income. They want to re-ball the benefits of options trading, but you really don't actually want to put in the effort. It’s very similar to somebody saying, “Look. I’m going to open up a restaurant.” The thought process is – “Look. If you open up a restaurant, you want to be involved in that business or you expect that business to do well for many years.” What people do is they open up their restaurant and they maybe take out a couple of menus, they do some advertising, they cook some food, but then they close down. That’s what people do in options trading. They say they want to do options trading, they wanted to be successful, they want to generate an income, but they don’t want to do the activities that are involved. That’s why I think that parents honestly make better options traders. If you have kids, the reason that… When you have your kids, you can’t just quit on your kids. When you have kids… This is something I knew would happen, but you really learn it as a parent and it’s nothing that you can learn or read in a book until you actually go through the experience. But when you start with your kid… When my girls were born, you can’t give up on them. I mean, you got to wake up every day and take care of that kid and there’s no one else that can do it for you. If you're a good parent, hopefully you want to be a good parent, you’ll realize that it's really important to make small corrections along the way. I mean, look. My girls now are four and 20 months and we’ve got one on the way. And so, we’re starting to continue to build out our kid portfolio, if you will. But I’m making small corrections along the way. I’m learning as my girls grow. As my oldest daughter, Molly, as she continues to grow and goes to school and learns new things and becomes very witty and very smart, I’m starting to learn new things along the way, but I can’t quit on her and I can never quit on her. In options trading, I think it’s very much the same. Once you commit to starting, I think the idea here is that you’d never commit to quitting. That’s really what it comes down to, is make small corrections along the way, realize that you’re starting this. Treat it like a kid. Treat it like a kid that you have to grow and mature and develop over many, many, many years. I know that in the first three months of Molly's life or Anna’s life or our new baby’s life, I know that in those first three months, I’m not going to teach them and they’re not going to learn everything they need to know to be great people and successful at life. It’s going to take time. And so, what people do in options trading is they think three months of really targeted hard work is going to make a difference. Although it may get you on the right path, it’s never going to lead to ultimate success because you have to have consistency. You have to again, treat options trading like having kids. You have to grow with your portfolio. You have to make new decisions and learn new things and really, it’s just about making small corrections along the way. Look. I’m not saying that you have to have kids obviously to be a good options trader. I’m just saying that if you commit to options trading like you commit to a relationship, a person, a business, I think over time, you will reap the vast majority of benefits that go along with that. I think honestly as a parent, I'm super happy with my girls. I couldn’t be happier. I’m so excited to have more kids. I want like five or six kids. I just want to continue to have kids because they make us very happy and I love having them around. And so, it’s that same thought process that I have with options trading. I love options trading or I wouldn't be doing these daily podcasts and writing blogs and doing videos. I really would not be doing this unless I truly love it. I don't look at it as this job I have to do. It’s a business. It’s a passion. It’s a way of life for us. And so, I think maybe just that concept might help you today and may help you think a little bit different about how you can approach options trading and how you can think about your future prospects, I guess for trading and what you need to do along the way. As always, hopefully you guys enjoy these. If you have any comments or questions, let me know. Until next time, happy trading!
