They also bear fruits for others to enjoy. Such is the work of benevolent people as well.In this episode, Dr. N. Hema Malini and Madhavi Nadig discuss selfless service. We chose this subhashitha in honour of Earth Day 2023.As trees serve other beings selflessly, great men help others, without thinking about themselves.Earth Day marks the birth anniversary of the modern environmental movement.Madhavi tells the story of how Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” led to Earth Day.This year, the theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Investing in our planet”.Our scriptures promote “manah poshaNe” over “deha poshaNe”, i.e. cultivating the mind, not the body; or, spiritual growth over material enjoyment.Tribal societies, untouched by modern lifestyles, continue to live in harmony with nature. The Chipko and Appiko movements prevented the destruction of trees and forests.Madhavi believes this subhashitha lists out the qualities of a good leader.A good leader creates a safe space for their team to experiment, take calculated risks and grow. When there’s failure, the leader steps up to bear the brunt, shielding the team from consequences. When the team’s efforts yield success, the leader steps back and lets them enjoy the limelight.Dr. Hema Malini’s father taught her that it’s only when people believe they work with a leader, and not for the leader, that they are the most productive. The onus of creating such an environment falls on the leader. In short, this subhashitha exhorts us to help others whenever possible and in all ways. How are you investing in our planet?@susambhashanam on Instagram & YouTube
