Fatty acids are the building blocks of fat in the body and have many functions including as structural parts of the cell membrane. Fatty acids synthesize prostaglandin an important cell signaling molecule. Thromboxanes (which regulate blood clotting) and Leukotrienes (important in immune function) are made from the precursor arachidonic acid.
