Alison Johnstone - Domestic Violence, Narcissistic Abuse, Trauma, Intuition, Healing

Allison Johnston is a 58 year old Mother of 4. Grandmother of 2 and a fur Mum to 2 beautiful dogs. She was a nurse for 24 years, and a medic in the RAAF for a number of those years. As a single mom, she re-educated herself, doing a 4 year, full time double degree in Social Work and Human Services, at the age of 42. Allison is an strong, empathetic, understated and compassionate woman who has an passion for helping the children and victims of domestic and family violence. We talk about emotional manipulation, victim blaming, the psychological effects of narcissistic abuse, sexual, emotional, financial and isolation tactics, the cycle of violence and the way self esteem is bottomed out in abusive relationships. We talk about the fight or flight response, walking on eggshells, homelessness, hyper-vigilance, the power of intuition, and safety plans for how to leave an abusive relationship. We touch on the underreporting of abuses and violence against women and children, about the shortage of refuges, and the lack of government funding. Domestic violence has increased by 75% since COVID, a reported 40 women have been killed in Australia, in 2020 alone, after leaving violent relationships We talk about the impact on children, their mental development, and the long term impacts on education, relationships, drugs and alcohol abuse, mental and physical health. It's a fascinating and necessary conversation. I found it powerful, and quite confronting given my own experiences, which I discuss to help give context. Should you find yourself wondering if you are also in an abusive relationship this conversation may help you find some grounding in this shape-shifting domain of violence and abuse. I am so grateful for Alison. She holds this very difficult and strong conversation with a gentle equanimity. If you have suffered please know that you are not alone. You can reclaim yourself one day at a time. Through education, support, and a whole lot of self love. It takes time. Healing is available, it is a precious and winding journey. Please enjoy this conversation.
