CFP Board is the professional standard-setting body for more than 84,000 CFP® professionals nationwide! In each episode, CFP Board discusses the latest in the financial planning profession, takes a deep dive into a key topic, and answers your questions about financial planning.   Today’s episode is about the wide variety of registered programs certified by CFP Board, tune in to get a better feel for what is available and why!   Key Takeaways [:20] Dan Drummond welcomes Dr. Mary Kay Svedberg, Director of Education at the CFP Board and asks her to talk a little bit about what her work entails. [1:52] Why are there so many available programs to choose from? These decisions are made alongside universities and depend on their needs and who they are marketing to. There is growth in the demand for higher level degrees in financial planning. [3:21] Mary Kay touches on the innovative ways education is being made available; blended learning has become more and more common. [4:10] Dan asks how the Ph.D. programs fit into the overall strategy for the future of the financial planning profession. [4:56] The programs are called ‘registered programs’ because the CFP Board is a certifying body and as such requires reporting from its programs in order to show compliance. [5:58] How can an interested person learn more about the available programs? The CFP.net website has a ‘find an educational program’ tool and the candidate forum is a great place to get some information from current candidates — who are genuinely active on the platform. [7:15] The 4 ‘E’s of CFP board include Education and it is made up of 2 requirements: Registered course work Bachelor’s degree So, in terms of career perspective, financial planning is appealing because everyone can call themselves a financial planner, but not everyone can call themselves a CFP® professional so it’s being taken more and more seriously. [10:35] Mary Kay touches on the upcoming events and programs, reminds everyone about the Baccalaureate Degree Discount for the examination and invites listeners to keep an eye out for spring(ish) 2020 for the next Registered Programs Conference.
